Workshop Topics

In all of our workshops, Tami focuses on several professional development elements that include training which mirrors practices and methods, modeling of key strategies, resources and practical techniques that teachers can use the day they return to class and positive feedback.  We will work together to develop and custom tailor a workshop that addresses the needs of a teacher or staff within a schedule that works for you.

Formats:

1/2 day - This consists of a two hour staff training focused on your choice of topics
and modeling in one primary or one intermediate classroom.

1 full day - This consists of a three hour staff training focused on your choice of topics and
modeling in 2-3 primary or 2-3 intermediate classrooms.

Workshop #1 – Enhancing Your Math Program with Engaging Math Centers:  K-2

Have you ever wanted to use small grouping to differentiate math instruction for the diverse levels in your classroom?  Discover how to help your primary grade students build the mathematics foundation they need with inexpensive, easy-to-implement and highly motivating center activities while you pull small groups.  You will learn practical strategies and effective techniques for planning and organizing productive math centers.  These activities will meet the needs and abilities of all students while maximizing time, materials and resources.

Workshop #2 – Providing Meaningful Literacy Practice
Through
Literacy Centers and Small Group Work:  K-2

Have you tried to implement small groups for reading or Guided Reading lessons and wondered whether or not the other students were receiving authentic literacy experiences?  During this workshop, we will focus on practical ways to successfully implement meaningful and easy to manage literacy centers that enhance and enrich student’s learning.

Workshop #3 – Differentiating Instruction and Supporting English
Language Learners in the Primary and Intermediate Grades:  K-2, 3-5

Do you want to give English Language Learners (ELLs) the tools and experiences needed to become successful students in the general education classroom?  If so, this is the workshop for you!  We will discuss what ELLs need to feel confident in learning academic content and ways to help meet rigorous performance standards.  You will leave with a better understanding of ELL development as well as a “tool-bag” of research-based, practical ideas, activities and lesson plans for immediate implementation in your own program.

Workshop #4
– Guided Writing:  Taking Your Students
Through the Writing Process and Publishing a Book:  K-2, 3-5

How exciting would it be to take your intermediate students through the writing process and publish an anthology of their best writing?  Imagine how motivated your students could become if they knew there was an ultimate purpose for their writing and practice!  This workshop gives effective teaching techniques for mini-lessons as well as whole group and small group instruction in the classroom.  These Guided Writing activities will motivate and support your struggling writers as well as challenge your proficient writers.  This workshop will take you from day one of the writing process up to a print-ready copy of your class’s anthology.  If you would like to take your anthology to the next level, we provide additional services to edit and publish your work in book form.  Students are able to see their own words in print and experience the process of real authors!

Workshop #5 - Teaching Literacy Elements
Through Literature Circles and Book Clubs:  4-6

Would you like to have strong, independent readers in your classroom who are able to think for themselves and guide their own learning?  During this highly motivating workshop, you will learn how to implement literature circles and book clubs using a variety of mini-lesson topics.  These mini-lessons include strategies for engaging students in book discussions, writing and knowledge of literacy elements.

Coaching

We have found that coaching is one of the most powerful tools for enhancing best teaching practices and professional development.  Coaching is most effective when the strengths, needs and desires of the individual and/or group are taken into account.

Tami is available to coach individuals or teams of educators toward more effective teaching practices using a variety of different techniques.  Simply choose the subject area of concern along with the technique that works best for you and/or the needs of the educators in your organization and I will custom tailor strategies that will enhance teacher and student achievement.

Subject Areas:

    Math

o        Small Group Instruction

o        Engaging Centers

o        Mini-Lessons

    Literacy

o        Guided Reading

o        Authentic Centers

o        Literature Circles/Book Clubs

o        Best Practices for ELL Students

    Language Arts

o        Writing Process:  Primary or Intermediate

o        Publishing

Techniques:

  • Lesson Review:  We discuss a lesson of your choice, you teach the lesson while I observe, then I share insights and strategies.

  • Team Teaching:  You choose a subject area, we plan and implement the lesson together, then discuss and reflect on the methods and strategies used.

  • Modeling:  We discuss a strategy that you would like to observe, I model the strategy, we then discuss how you can implement the strategy in your teaching.

  • Friendly Chats:  This technique allows me to sit with individual teachers for 20-30 minutes and discuss strengths, concerns and questions about specific strategies and implementation.  We set up a rotating schedule for the day and often a roving sub is used to accommodate the individual sessions.  We discuss powerful strategies that address needs and propose ways to implement the strategies in your classroom.

Consulting

Tami is available to consult with you and/or your staff about the most urgent needs of your teachers and/or students.  Our goal is to better equip teachers and students with the knowledge and desire they need to be successful in career and life.

Sessions may be held over the phone, via email, or in person.  Tami is available to consult with principals, improvement teams, coaches or any other key staff members.  Fees are charged on an hourly basis depending on the size of the group.
